Nyonya Beaded Shoes - Celina Chow

Beaded shoes with a history now available either in a modern or traditional pattern at Catz Handmade. Here is some facts on Nyonya beaded shoes :
Nyonya beaded shoes (or Manek shoes as it is locally known) originated from the 'Peranakan'heritage and women wore them as part of their traditional costumes. They were most popular during the 1930's and worn during special occassions like birthdays and weddings, or simply any occassion. The art of making them orginated from the Straits of Malacca, and through the years this delicate artwork is still confined to this ethnic group. The process in making these handiwork is most time-consuming because of its intricate designs.

“Peranakan refers to the descendants of the early Chinese community who settled in the Malay Archipelago from the 17th century and who has integrated with the Malays in this region."

The method in making these shoes is by stitching various tiny colored glass beads and sewn onto a piece of cross-stitch cloth.

“The most unique feature is the type of beads that was used by the Nyonyas of the past. The ‘manek potong’… ‘Manek’ means beads, ‘potong’ means cut and it is like a faceted diamond. It is a cut bead.”

Everything Cloisonne

It was like a mission to be accomplished when I first set my eyes on some cloisonne beads at a supplier's shop. I got myself a few selection of beads to start my experiments. Here are the outcomes...

During the experiments, I have chinese knotting in mind. It was implemented into most of my designs using cloisonne beads.

*** Next : new bracelets coming soon....

Recycling Crafts

I always have the habit of keeping some old stuffs that I might use them as crafts later. Paper, cards, envelopes, old jewellery, ribbons & so on. Well, this recent Chinese New Year, I managed to use some of them (to clear some of my craft clutters).

"Using recycled stuff to create original new design craft  and to reduce clutters"

"Butterfly with Love"

                    "Red & Pink Blossoms" "Ceiling
Blossoms"
For the "Butterfly with Love", I used old Chinese New Year (CNY) envelopes (thicker ones).
Instructions (Butterfly) :
1) Cut 2 circles from the paper and crepe them up.
2) Tie them up at the middle with a string.
3) Insert a 3 inch thin wire at the centre of the crepe paper and bend 2 spirals at each end.
4) Glue a gold labucci at the top of the wire.
"Red Lantern"             "Tripple
                                     Happiness"

For the "Red Lantern", I used "Ang Pow" packets. This is my first lantern and there are some areas I need to improve. Second lantern is in my craft list somewhere before the next CNY. That time, I will insert my Chinese knotting in the craft.

As for the "Tripple Happiness", I managed to get an old brooch as the "tail".

HAPPY CRAFTING!!!
